How to prevent pollution in our waterways
The effects from water pollution can be catastrophic, depending on the kinds of chemicals that are present in the water supply. Water pollution happens when pollutants are discharged into bodies of water without adequate treatment to remove harmful compounds. Water pollution actually affects the organisms that live in these bodies of water.
Considering the fact that 70% of the Earth is covered in water and fourteen billion pounds of garbage is dumped into the ocean every year, it is not difficult to grasp the urgency of the situation. The most common type of garbage is plastic, which we’ve discussed before. Plastic bags can easily become hazards for birds, fish and other aquatic creatures.
The question we should all be asking ourselves is: how can we prevent this from happening?
The answer is actually very straightforward.
Firstly, we need to realize that waterways can be easily polluted from the daily household activities we perform at our homes. Then, we have to start making some changes – the sooner the better.
For instance, most people still don’t recycle and dispose of their trash properly, which is essential. There are many hazardous products that we should be careful with when throwing them away.
Another critical component of not contributing to water pollution is using nontoxic household products whenever possible. In other words: chemicals are bad! The less strong chemicals we use in our homes, the better it is for our water supplies. Take a look at what we have to offer!
There is something else we rarely realize contributes to pollution: not cleaning up after our dog! Pet droppings enter water catchment systems during rain and cause a rise in bacteria in the waterways.
Even easier precautions like not littering, not using our toilets as wastebaskets, not pouring cooking grease down the sink can also make difference. Last, but not least – think again next time you have only a few pairs of socks in the washing machine – run it only if you have a full load, as that conserves water and electricity.
